Military Products
Non-polymer-based electro-optic devices, such as off-the-shelf 10Gb/s lithium niobate modulators, cannot operate in space applications due to the presence of ionizing radiation. Electro-optic polymers exhibit" radiation hardness" making them ideal for high altitude, standard orbit (satellite reconnaissance, GPS, etc.) and deep space applications. Of equal importance, electro - optic polymers are more versatile and allow for system applications that would be virtually impossible through traditional means. Multi -channel modulators incorporating several hundred to several thousand waveguides can be fabricated out of polymers via standard lithographic techniques which would be infeasible to construct out of lithium niobate or similar material s. Through cooperative strategic efforts with other companies, Lightwave has identified several military products of immediate necessity which are in active development. |
