Optical Waveguides, Optical Transistors

Lightwave, in collaboration with the City University of New York (CUNY), is working on a Photonics Initiative to develop all-optical waveguides--a basic building block of optical technology that will be a component of all-optical computing.

CUNY and Lightwave Logic have already begun fabrication of the company’s first all-optical slot waveguides with Perkinamine NR™.

A thin coating of Perkinamine NR™ was deposited on the walls inside each of the lines that has been magnified and shown in the picture on the right. When a light wave is focused into the slot, the polymer coating will go into a highly excited state that will alter the refractive index of the light resulting in a measurable phase shift.
